I'd never had a black sesame latte until a trip to Maui, and after one sip, I was hooked.

Toasty, nutty, and just slightly savory, black sesame adds incredible depth to coffee. This syrup is surprisingly easy to make at home and transforms an everyday latte into something that feels straight from your favorite coffee shop.

This recipe creates 1 cup of syrup.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup black sesame seeds

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Coarsely grind the black sesame seeds using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder.

  2. Toast the ground sesame seeds in a small saucepan over medium heat until fragrant, about 2–3 minutes. Be careful not to burn them.

  3. Add the sugar and water, stirring until combined.

  4. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, or until the syrup reaches your desired consistency.

  5. Remove from the heat and let cool for 15–20 minutes.

  6. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, discarding the sesame solids.

  7. Transfer to a jar or bottle and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
